Our office was retained by Western to develop a new home for the Sports and Recreation Services (SRS) staff and men’s/women’s basketball and volleyball teams. For our scope of work, we were asked to document and redesign several levels of Alumni Hall in order to provide options for the University.

The focus for these renovations was to provide upgraded facilities in order to attract and retain new players and staff. Additionally, we were asked to create a new celebratory space where Western could showcase their past and present sports achievements. This was done by creating a modernized trophy space, detailed with adjustable shelves, lighting, TV displays, and a custom Western Mustangs floor.

This renovation included several new types of space for the SRS group within Alumni Hall to assist players and staff . User group sessions were conducted to design new change rooms, training areas and seminar spaces for several of Westerns men’s/women’s basketball/volleyball teams.

The highlight of the renovation is a custom trophy space on level one that is directly adjacent to the main entrance. Based on the heritage of the building and location of the renovations, our team needed to address several challenges to make the project successful. First, was navigating the complex HVAC system and strategically placing room locations to avoid potential clashes and to keep the total cost of construction low. The second challenge was dealing with the significant grade/level variances. Review of player height and available headroom was a key conversation in order to make spaces that would be functional and comfortable for everyone at the University.
